CHAPTER THIRTEEN

It’s Not Terminal; You’ve Got Aliens

Fuzzy wigs aside, this was basically first contact. At least as far as the aliens were concerned when it came to me, and I was determined to make it as uncomfortable as possible. Because, hey, when you set out to make something terrible in the first place, then everything going wrong means everything is going right. And knowing how frequently everything in my life went terribly, utterly wrong, I was going to jump the gun on this one and just make it so.

The doors hissed open, old gears groaning from their brief jaunt through space. The Agency’s parking bay was as dull as it gets, except for the fact that there were spaceships instead of cars, but this wasn't my first hangar bay at this point. Even so, I put on a good show of being wowed by my surroundings. No point ruining my cover by letting the Agency know I already had some alien experience.

I was flanked by two strangers, absolutely foreign-looking wearing costumes so intricate that it was impossible to tell that they were, in fact, Zander and Blayde. I had joined them in the flowy, hippie garb, the hair of my wig wavy and long. I was already missing my tie-dye apparel, even as mucked up by Blayde’s murder as it was.

The huge shuttle docking lot was connected directly to the terminal by a small elevator, a link from space to the central hub of the Agency, a sudden transition from grey darkness to a large shopping mall with duty-free shops lining every side of the stingily shaped hall. Dull, grey metal gave way to sleek, white walls, and for a second, I thought the Traveler had thrown up all over this place. I guess the Alliance had a single architect they hired for everything.

Zander led the way along one of the raised walkways, above the swell of happy, duty-free shoppers. Leafy greens hung from above, giving the impression that the artificial lights were just filtered sunlight through glass roofs of a conservatory. Music pumped through the speakers, surrounding us in gentle sway, making the entire place feel a little like a mall and spa had a dysfunctional space child.

“We're not seriously getting answers here?” I asked, unable to hide my awe of this place. How all this was hiding just a few hundred thousand miles from Earth beneath our very noses boggled my mind. It was like picking up a rock and finding that worm-kind had a terrifyingly advanced society just inches from the surface.

“Once we get out of the terminal? Sure,” said Zander. “Just keep an eye out for security as we go.”

Blayde pointed her long finger at a sign on the wall. “Spaceport security. Follow the signs. Be clear, concise. We'll meet you back here.” She paused, her eyes falling on something far in the distance. “I have some important shopping to do. Good luck.”

Zander and I watched her go, her hippie dress quickly disappearing in the crowd.
